I have a borderline ATSC channel that is known to crash the RecordingService (see separate thread if curious).

In order to figure out exactly why the service crashes, Sub would like to get raw TS data at the moment of crash.

My ATSC receiver (AVerTVHD A180 MCE) doesn't come with any TS capture software. I'm taking a look at the Twinhan BDA capture tool to see if it will work with my BDA-compliant card. The Twinhan tool appears to want to issue its own tuning request, not sure if this can coexist peacefully with GB-PVR.

Anybody know of a tool or technique to get this working? Sub says the Transport Stream mux configurable within GB-PVR doesn't save the entire stream, so that is insufficient.

TIA!

Can VLC open it as a capture device? If so, you can save the stream with it.

Dunno, haven't tried. Do you know if it can save EVERYTHING or just a single audio and video program stream?

I'll check this out too, thanks for the idea.

I believe VLC saves the entire stream. My guess is it'll work for you. It's options for capturing streams (as well as transforming them) is pretty impressive.

OK, sounds good. If I can get some of the raw data perhaps Sub will know what to do with it.

I appreciate the lead, all I've used VLC for up until now was to test my authored DVDs and stream video. Very cool utility.

I can see a problem here unless you have two tuners. If you want to capture the TS at the same time as GB-PVR is doing a normal recording, I don't see that any software can just 'tap in' to the same tuner as GB-PVR is using to record.

I might be wrong as I'd only consider myself as an intermediate level DirectShow programmer but, whenever I've inadvertently tried to access the same tuner/capture components that are already in use by GB-PVR or another application, the attempt fails. This means you'd need a second tuner, be able to work out which tuner GB-PVR is using and then point the TS recording app. to the other tuner.

Cheers,
Brian

Yeah, good point bgowland. I was focused on how to capture the ts data from the channel, not how to get it when GB-PVR is recording it. I think you're right.. you'd need to two tuners: one recording in GB-PVR and the other recording the same channel so you could look at the TS data at the point when GB-PVR crashed.

If the crash is frequent enough that you can reproduce it every few minutes or something, simple capturing the TS from the one tuner for a few minutes might be enough for sub to go on. If it's infrequent that's gonna be a tough nut to crack.
