I am sure this question have been answered before, I just can't seem to find it. I am currently recording to dvr-ms but would like to make mpeg2 files instead. Has anyone found a good encoder to do this? Thanks.

My System:
AMD X2/4600+ on MSI K8N Mobo
Geforce 7900GS
1 Meg Ram
320 GB SATA II HD

With digital DVB and ATSC devices, the type of file you end up with depends on the mux filter you're using. The TS Mux option records .ts files. The Microsoft DVR-MS Mux records .dvr-ms files. The Cyberlink and ATI Muxes record .mpg files. That said, most ATSC users find they have to stick to the VR-MS Mux or the TS Mux to get reliable recordings. The Cyberlink and ATI muxes arent very tolerant of problems in the stream.

Cyberlink is usually the preferred codec for this. You can try it, but it is usually a bad idea to try recording directly to mpeg2 format. Any glitch in the signal and the recording service has a tendency to record indefinitely, ruining the current recording and failing to record any subsequent programming on the same tuner.

There is an option to transcode after the recording. This also uses the cyberlink codec. I personally have not had great results this route either, but I have always tried to get the transcoding done ASAP, which seems to have an impact on recordings during the transcode process.

My current method is to play my recordings through a UPnP media player, allowing my media server to transcode on the fly. I get occasional stuttering this way, but may throw more CPU at it soon. I wish some of these promised GPU solutions would become available.

Let me just qualify this by saying DVB digital devices work much better than ATSC when recording directly to .mpg file with the Cyberlink mux. Infact I do all my digital recordings using the Cyberlink mux and I have zero problems with it.

I am also certain that the problem with ATSC is in the mux, not the recording service. Smile

Hey, thanks. That might actually be my problem with DVB-S recordings. About a week ago, every few minutes I started a "glitch" then audio/video synch issues after that. I'll try the TS Mux first.
