this issue is less a gbpvr one and more a general MVP issue. seeing as how there is no forum at hauppauge website, i'll post here to see if anyone can help.

I had been running gbpvr fine through a wired MVP for some time now. I changed over to the new AT&T Uverse. they supplied me with a new 2wire modem/router. ever since then, the MVP will not connect. I went over the troubleshooting FAQ on the wiki but cannot even get the hauppauge software to connect.

after powering on the mvp, all i get is "connecting to DHCP server/connecting to MediaMVP software." it bounces back and forth between the 2. i tried this with the hauppauge sw on and off.

my best guess is that router is blocking something. when i check the router info, it shows a separate IP for what i assume is the MVP, so it seems the DHCP has assigned an IP. I have no idea what that means, but from what i gathered reading the wiki, a router with DHCP is required.

any ideas?

Not that we don't want to help ypu :-) but I think you'll find there is a forum at the UK website (though not at the US one) http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/forum.html
Plus there's one here. http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php

I guess I wrote the major part of WIKI FAQ on Troubleshooting the MVP based on a bunch of comments I read on the forums, so I am not doing a good job if it doesn't work for you ..... :o The only thing I can think of right now is:

1. Presumably you plugged the MVP into the router, router to Ethernet Card in PC? In my system, my router (192.168.1.1) is setup as the gateway to the Internet and out to the DSL box. So what I do is have my GBPVR server setup with TCP/IP Properties manually configured (192.168.1.10) to address the Gateway and with a fixed IP address (this is not imperative) but means that with dongle.bin versions that do allow you to CHOOSE a fixed IP address, you can then choose the GBPVR server.
2. Firewall or Norton Worm protection. Did you try with that off in WInXP? If it works with it off, simply let GBPVR.exe and GBPVRRecordingService.exe through.
3. When you say Hauppauge s/w on/off, did you actually disable the services in Services?
4. You have 1 MVP set to Auto-start?

thanks for the links to the other forums. i'll have look over them tomorrow, but i'm trying your suggestions first.

1. this new modem/router i got is an all in one. looking at my assigned IP for the server it is 192.168.1.65. the router's IP is 192.168.1.254. i dont see an option to CHOOSE an IP in the gbpvr config for the dongle that i'm using. i'm using the one that came with v99.12.

2. no go with the firewall off. no norton products installed.

3. the hauppauge s/w is disabled. FWIW i tried to connect using the hauppauge services on and still no connection.

4. in the past i have always launched the little mvp server window when i wanted to use it. this connection problem exists whether i have it auto-launched via the config or manually launched.

something else i just noticed while looking at the network connections. I see an incoming connections heading with no clients connected. I've never seen this before on my old router/network. i tried manually entering a range of IPs to recognize that encompasses the above addresses, but still nothing.

well, after doing some reading, i used the arp -a cmd to see if the MVP is connected and nothing besides the gateway and the server come up. However, looking in the 2wire browser, a new IP is registered to the MAC of the MVP. I'm using the hauppauge s/w to trouble shoot this thing and i'm still stuck at the contacting dhcp server message...

Reading back, things changed due to a Router change, so how about the 2wire Firewall itself?

That thing has a REALLY nice browser interface btw!

A quick thought.....does your new router have DHCP enabled? What make/model of router is it?

@ jksmurf - i'm trying to figure out how to do this. it doesnt look as simple as "disable firewall." it looks like i need to find the ports and make an entry to open them. i remember seeing some port numbers required for the gbpvr/mvp combo but cant find them...

@tipstir - unfortunately i dont have another nic card, but i know they are cheap. would i be using 2 ethernet ports on the same PC? One for the gateway and one for the 2nd switch? Being a noob to networking, will this allow unique IPs to each NIC?

@peterh - yes, the router does DHCP and it is enabled. it is the 3800hgv-b.

so i found these ports posted by sub in another thread
- 5906 which is the control socket (connected in screenshot above)
- 8337 which is the stream socket (listening in the screenshot above)

i opened these ports on the server in the 2wire firewall but still nothing. does it make sense to open them in the MVP's firewall instead?

edit: i opened both the TCP and UDP if that makes a difference

well, i gave it another go and it works...how? i dont know

i connected my personal router via the LAN port to the 2wire gateway and plugged in the MVP to my personal router. I cant pull up any IP for the MVP but it all of a sudden works. using the arp -a command pulls up only my server and gateway. again, i have no idea how its working, but i'm excited that it finally is! thanks for all your suggestions.
