Do srt files work with MKV files

I am trying for the first time to use an srt with and mkv file, however, the subtitles do not show up. They work fine with avi files. I am using MyVideos to view them which works fine otherwise. I tried to switch them on and off unsuccessfully.

To be honest, I dont know. I've never used a mkv file.

is it an actual SRT? or is it an embedded subtitle?

I suggest directvobsub if you cant get it to work (a good version is included in the CCCP)
