I'm trying to set up my new HDHomeRun tuner, and after lots of struggling I have finally got GB-PVR to scan my channels in the channel mapper. It finds my available channels, but the list below the preview window is just a cryptic list of frequencies.

Clicking on any of the items in the list results in a black preview window. So I have no way of knowing what channel that frequency correlates to.

What am I doing wrong? How can I get the preview to work?

Thanks,

Anthony

Are you sure these are unencrypted channels?

Since it's just a cryptic list of frequencies with no preview, I can't be sure they are the unencrypted channels, but I know I have at least 9 channels on my basic cable that I can view in VLC.

I don't know how the QAM Mapper plays into GBPVR's scanning, but when I enabled all 60+ digital channels in QAM Mapper, GBPVR found those 60. When I only enabled the 6 or so local broadcast stations, that's all that GBPVR found too. So I assume GBPVR uses the QAM mapping in some manner?

Still, I can't find any correlation between the info in the remap file, and the list of frequencies in GBPVR.

I also have a few unencrypted channels I want to record that do not provide call sign information. So I'd really need to preview to figure out which ones those are.

Any ideas?

GB-PVR scans for what is called PSI (service information), and reports any channels it finds. I think the HDHomeRun works by generating fake PSI information. So GB-PVR isnt directly aware of this, with the QAM mapping being used behind the scenes on the drivers or the device itself.

I've never used a HDHomeRun myself, so not really that familiar with it and not in a position to enlighten you on this.

I suspect you might get this behaviour you describe if you have encrypted channels in there. After doing a scan, close the 'map digital channels to epg channels' screen, then edit the .cache file in 'C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\BDA' and remove any lines you suspect are encrypted channels (or at least move them to the bottom). Next try going back into the 'map digital channels to epg channels' screen. Hopefully this will help.

Sub,

No encrypted channels, but after looking at the .cache I was finally able to identify what the located channels were (physical channel and program number), and assigned a few to the known channels.

Then I tried watching those channels in "Live TV". I got a warning message from Windows firewall, and then added GBPVR to the exception list (I thought I had already done that). But, I only got a few badly distorted frames before it locked up.

I quit GBPVR then opened up the config utility, and presto some video finally appeared in the preview window. It must have been the firewall issue.

However, I only get a few distorted frames before the preview locks up too.

Now what?

Sorry, I dont really know. Maybe try a different video decoder, and check you've got a good strong signal.
