This should work properly now... Remember to do each button in order, and wait for the hourglass to go away...
Here goes...
(1) 'Export Recordings' -- no hourglass, could not find any new file that would confirm this step, where do I look?
(2) 'Purge Databases' -- hourglass (prox 2 secs)
(3) 'Update TV Guide' -- ZSchedFix Msg window: Since you have an UpdateEPG.bat in your GB-PVR folderit will also be called. Continue?
I selected "OK"
No Hourglass. No apparent actions taking place in Windows Task Manager

Now, for the fun...
(1) NO channels found upon running GB-PVR
(2) Using the gbpvr/Config.exe and following /Capture Sources/Update EPG upon completion I DO get the channels back AND there are now in correct order (no longer interspersed as was the origin of this thread Big Grin )

Inference is that the UpdateEPG step during ZSchedFix running is not being executed for some reason. ((The UpdateEPG.bat has been running automatically each nite and doing so reliably for some time now.))

It would be good to know...
(a) why the UpdateEPG is not running, and how get that step working
(b) what it was that you discovered from the result of Test3 running and how that influenced the approach to getting the shelling to work

Cheers and beers,

Cheers and beers,

well it was worth a shot. It worried me when you said that there was no console window, but the log did say that it completed, so I tried...

It would seem that the shell() causes a error 5 and CreateProcess() doesn't even shell.

It may be related, may not. I was trying to find out what was wrong on your system, rather than the program because in ZProcess version 1 I can't fix it (lost the source).

I hoped that I found a method for the new versions of Ztools, but it appears that there will be folks out there that have the anomaly that you are experiencing, that I will not be able to fix. I am done chasing the problem, and have chalked it up to your system.

I believe strongly that it is a case of DLL Hell (look that up when you have fun). It would probably be fixed if your reinstalled your windows.

I have tried this software on so many windows computers, that it HAS to be something peculiar about your machine. I just wanted to find out what it was and see if there was a fix.

(If you ever wanted to use ZProcess, you will have no alternative but to reinstall Windows)

Question is: would you reinstall just for a VB6 program or two. I would only because one glitch is usually a symptom of others not yet discovered...

Now as far as the original thread:

The original point of this software was to let you do everything from one interface. But this is how you could do everything necessary with hardly using ZSchedFix...

  1. Export: In GB-PVR Config, on the plugins tab, click Export.

  2. Backup the devnz\gbpvr\recording-dump.xml file that was created.

  3. Purge: Run ZSchedFix. ONLY press 'Purge'. wait. Close ZSchedFix...

  4. Update EPG: From your GB-PVR tray icon, click Update EPG. Wait till complete....

  5. Next, in the GB-PVR FOLDER, delete, recording-dump.xml file and retore the file you backed up.

eg, the original file was 'recording-dump.xml'. You backed it up to 'copy of recording-dump.xml'. After deleting the recording-dump.xml file, rename your back up to be recording-dump.xml...

To test, right click the recording-dump.xml file and select edit with notepad. It should be loaded with stuff. That's good. Only three or four lines is bad...

  6. Import: Then in the GB-PVR config., plugins, click import

  7. Refresh: Then from the tray icon, click Update EPG again.

This will export, purge, update, import and refresh...

Thank you for your testing and patience. It's too bad that we were unable to find the reason for the failure...

I cannot thank you enough for you efforts, except to say 'there's always beer for you in Salem (Mass that is)'

I'm not alone in recognizing the screen names of the heavy hitters among the GB-PVR contributors - and it is always a marvel to me how much effort you and others expend to help others. Thanks.

Special thanks for the "do everything necessary with hardly using ZSchedFix..." procedure. All of the Zap2It replacement activity could continue to produce problems withscrewed up TV scheds - so I'll likely need it many more times.

Re .dll hell and reinstalling WinXP -- if there were a way to do that without losing all data on the hard disk and having to reinstall all of the family's apps then it'd be a regular routine, but alas...

Many and most sincere thanks for your tireless help,
TomH

I'm writing something that will streamline the manual process even further. If you don't mind, I'll ask you to test the new idea soon.

Thanks for your help...

Tomh and pBS... would you mind trying this batch file...?

I'm reminded of the phrase... KISS... Keep it simple stupid.

This will work so well for people with GB-PVR 1.0.8 and higher, that I'll put it on the EPG wiki page that I'm also writing, and just kill the ZSchedFix project..

Thanks so much for helping me...

copy the batch and the sqlite3.exe into the GB-PVR folder...

pbs, you may recognize our old friend...

Sorry for the delay, from this coast I've been unable to get onto the forum till now...

Very nice! Now that I've cured several problems that were getting in the way of your new FixChannels batch file all seems like heaven again.

Well almost. There are some unexpected side effects: under GB-PVR/Recordings/, the following entries/values are clobbered (for me)
* Ready
* What's New
* Recurring
* Pending

As these are all very valuable settings, and don't usually get zeroed out during either GB-PVR upgrades or EPG Updates- do you have any ideas on how I might prevent them from being lost ?? -- and still get the other benefits of FixChannels of course Smile

Thanks a lot
TomH

PS
Since you mentioned you're planning on making FixChannels a part of the Wiki -- I'll offer a few of the hurdles I discovered as potential input for any "Troubleshooting" that you might include to help newbies like me)...
When trying to run solely via the FixChannels.bat I discovered...
(1) My UpdateEPG.bat was in fact not processing correctly. I'm Using the combo of YahooXMLTv.exe with the I-xmltv enhancements to build my Guide data XML file. FixChannels was working correctly, but the local source file was not getting updated via download of new shows from Yahoo! so naturally it might appear that the problem is FixChannels when it's not.
(2) FixChannels would not run to completion because the program PriorityRecording.exe, which was being called by the PostUpdateEPG.bat was throwing an error and waiting for user to clear a dialog box. Since I was multitasking while waiting for FixChannels to complete I misinterpreted the relationship between that msg box and the failure to complete. After eliminating PriorityRecording form the PostUpdateEPG.bat all was well.

In reality, the batch file works exactly as ZSchedFix did. So if your recurring and recording schedule got zonked during operation, it would have happened with ZSchedFix too...

The data got messed with because some of the procedure didn't work right. You probably restarted the process half way through. The Recording-Dump.xml was zeroed out, and there was no data to re-import

I use a different EPG update method, and it was called from the UpdateEPG.bat too. It made for a very long process, but if the entire EPG Update process works, just as it would when it normally updates, like in the middle of the night, then there shouldn't be any problem.

What you could have done was edit both UpdateEPG.bat and PostUpdateEPG.bat so that the very very very first thing in both bats would be

Code:
exit

That would effectively, prevent anything from running, and would not be necessary for using FixChannels.bat

I've updated the batch file to remind the user to add the 'exit' (and remove it at the end)

Thank you for pointing out some stuff... I have asked sub to look into building this into GB-PVR...

Edit: I've also added logic to the batch file to backup the recording-dump.xml with a date stamp, so you can always restore later, manually, in case there was a problem...

I've edited the batch file one last time (I think)... instead of having the user manually editing the Update and PostUpdate batch files, the FixChannels.bat now temporarily renames the batch files, gets them out of the way, does its stuff and then renames them back again.

Much more elegant...

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

BTW, this just crossed my mind... isn't the source data that is used to feed the onscreen TV Guide stored in a database?
If so, why isn't the remedy as simple as sorting the records as a part of the query statement?
I think that sql standards include an 'order by' statement -- so even a windows db engine (sqlite3) would have that ability.

The way sub has GB-PVR refer to the database, he doesn't use a query statement. It juts uses the order that's there. I think that's so those of us that have two lineups, will have two sections of the TV guide for the their two lineups..
