ffdshow & dscaler

Greetings Folks

I've heard alot about these two but just haven't picked up on their uses. Are they just another decoder ? Also when I've googled ffdshow there are so many versions out there. Which one is recommended ?

Descaler5 is an mpeg2 decoder. FFDSHOW is a suite of encoders/decoders that work for most files. I like getting it here:
