I am getting jerky playback from time to time. This is much more noticeable when playing recorded TV rather than live TV but looking carefully I can see it occurring in live TV as well. My Divx movie library plays back smoothly.

I have the SAF filters installed (I think) but I am not sure if FFDShow video is in use even though it is set as the Mpeg-2 playback video decoder as I do not get the red FFv box in the system tray although I do get the FFa blue audio box.

I have tried a variety of video renderers (default) VMR9 Fullscreen Exclusive and most of the MPEG2 - Playback video decoders (I show the following options)
System default
ffdshow Video Decoder
Ulead DVD Video Decoder
Cyberlink Video/SP decoder (PDVD9)
Ulead MPEG Video decoder

on the system which is a dedicated machine running XP with an dual core CPU running at 2.6Ghz and 2G Ram with a Nvidia 8600GTS video card running 1024 x 768 reduced to S-video 576i output for my old SD TV and a haupage PVR 150 capture card (SD only if I understand this correct).

I'm afraid I don't understand the filter decoding and playing process very well and I would appreciated any guidance on how to get past this problem as apart from this jerkyness the system runs very well.

Regards
David

There's no universal solution, as far as I can tell.

Most (but not all) problems seem to stem from choice and configuration of the decoder, so you need to take a close look at what the decoder is doing.

Remove any enabled features such as deinterlacing and add the features back one by one, checking the picture quality each time. If the problem returns and seems to be caused by a must have feature (such as deinterlacing), then install another decoder, and repeat the process.

When that's been exhausted, start at the top with the first decoder, but this time change the renderer (ie VMR9, EVR etc). Repeat...

Sooner or later you will alight on a configuration that satisfies you. There's no substitute for trial and error, in my experience...

let card do deinterlacing, set output colorspace to nv12 only, and no deinterlacing, easier to show than to say...setup like in the pic...
and make sure libmpeg2 is selected for mpeg2 codec on codec tab...
should do the trick even with hd streams...

You might also set your video resolution to 720X576. The usual recommendation back in the day was that for standard definition, with analog output to the TV (composite or S-video), the video card resolution should match the "native" resolution of the program, thus no need for scaling. This worked well for me in the US with NTSC. I think you're on PAL where the native resolution is 720X576.

That said, I think there is more going on with your system than just this, but this _may_ help a bit.

yea, it should...nv12 is the default colorspace of dxva, btw...
try yuy2 as second choice if it doesn't work well for you..
dxvachecker can tell you what colorspaces are accelerated for your card..
i think they actually may have had it first..not just cuz of the name..[NV]
[ati's fav was yuy2 in the beginning]

it's the closest thing i've found to a 'universal' setup that works for any card..even intel..
[worked alot on this when i was making the gbpvr client livecd]
it's not fully accelerated, but at least more than half...Smile
[deinterlacing takes way more cpu than the decoding itself]
which means, decoding the pictures isn't hard, it's sending those full res pics to the display that's hard, and that depends alot on video card driver unless you're using software deinterlacing, and that is just hard on any system...and you'd still need to get those pics out to the display quickly, so a fast mem video card still needed..[128 bit or better]
so getting a good deinterlacing video card driver seems like a must...makes it much easier to find solutions..[tearing is, many times, a fault of the driver, not codecs]

Thank you - I have made some progress but I have not complete solved the problem.

I have set the output colorspace to nv12 as per the above screen shot
I have set the native resolution to 720x576
I have selected libmpeg2 as the mpeg2 codec on the codec tab and now I can get all the on screen info showing which helps a lot. Playback of live TV is now excellent but I cant get any playback video from recordings. I have run dxvachecker on the video card and it shows nv12 as an accepted colour space but I did notice that the resolutions specified under this included 720x480 1280x720 and 1290 x 1080 and not 720x576 as I run but I don't know if this is relevant or not.

The only way I can see the video from recordings is to set the mpeg2 codec to 'disabled' and then I am back to my very jumpy playback. I must be close though - any advice is appreciated.

check the logs as they will say which decoder is actually being used to file playback..
i'm guessing that unregistering that codec will get you going...
[and let ffdshow decode files too]

I'm sorry to ask for further help. I have attached what I think are the relevent log files but I cannot see that the codec that may be causing the problem. would you mind having a look?

Try removing Haali media splitter and see if it improves. If it does and you need Haali for something else, make sure you uncheck "Enable MPEG-TS support" and "Enable MPEG-PS support" when reinstalling.
