any ideas if I could run a linux main OS, and then windows in a virtual machine, but with enough support for the hardware to enable me to run GBPVR in the VM ?
Prefer linux for storage/backup and slimserver, but went back to windows to run GBPVR.
(dont tell me to go to MythTV, I need GBPVR to use my MVP as a client)

there's a myth client for the mvp...Big Grin
try MVPMC..seriously every MVP owner should..Smile

i doubt the lin/win mix would work very well, tho running win with linux in VM is probably only way to get the capture cards working for gbpvr..
[not sure if cap drivers will work on vm-win]
plus the interface would be dog slow..

I don't think you'll get access to the capture cards in the vm session.

BTW I think the latest mvpmc (on mvp) supports mythtv with full functionality. I would like to try the latest mythtv with the latest linux distros, but my .99 or .95 GBPVR is working fine, and I dont want to mess with it yet Smile

Me neither... but I would be tempted if I could port my GBPVR setup over. Ah well.. maybe something for the future.

If you don't need a capture card GBPVR runs ok as a mvp server in a VM I've done it quite a bit for testing various version. One of the beauties of running a VM though is you can copy and try it yourself.

In general based on what you say I'd just set up a basic linux box. NAS and Slimserver requirements could be met by a '386.

Note since mvpmc is mentioned here, mvpmc can also be a slimserver client, although I prefer psycik's ML2 plugin with GBPVR for serving music.

Yes it possible to use GBPVR within a VM, I use a VM with a USB Capture Card to provide the hardware into the VM. The only way to provide a Capture card to a VM is via a USB port. I'm using VMware 5.5 on my Dev machine, and I have several VMs with GBPVR for testing plugins etc.

Running the host OS as linux I would expect to be ok...

It'll struggle a bit with the new UI in PVRX2.exe, if that UI is possible at all, but I've definitely been able to run the old GBPVR.exe in a VM with USB capture device.

Does a nova-t-500 count as a USB device? It's a PCI card but uses USB chips AFAIK and appears in control panel as USB before it's drivers are loaded. Hmmmm, it also appears in the "safely remove hardware" tray tool.
