video too bright, program just fine

I had a problem with my system, that I fixed by reloading the video drivers.
after that, all the videos are way too bright.
if I adjust the brightness/contrast so the videos look good, then the time bar and all the menus are almost black.

has anyone seen this before??
did I download a bum driver??

PS--
it is like this with nvidia and cyberlink decoders.

normally the other way around for me

you can adjust the decoder brightness on its own
with nvidia you click on the icon in the task bar if you want to do while movie is running
or you can do it from the config panel

after loading 4 different video card drivers, I found an older one that works beautifully.
