Do you both use Haali media splitter for, er, media that needs splitting? MKV files and the like. And if not, what do you use?

I haven't had occasion to split (or for that matter, join) any mkv files, so my answer would be no.

yeah, I actually use it as part of the CCCP, I have found that it works well and I can set the defaults so that it will play the Japanese audio and English subs, no matter what order they are in (in multi audio files). I use it quite heavily because KAA is probably my favorite group.

Thanks all!

Kaizen - you may be using it without realizing it. It would show up in the tray during playback of (most notably) MKV and OGM files.

I'm very fuzzy on the details (the whole 'graph' thing still confuses me), but, if my understanding is correct, it sits between the file and the playback device, feeding the latter on the part of the file that the device wants (in our case, typically one audio stream of two or more).

At least, I THINK that's how it works.

what part of the graph are you fuzzy about?

the graph describes what directshow is doing to decode your file, so it shows what it is using to demux (split) and then what streams are being passed to each codec. and then the codec then passes it off to a renderer, which connects to a device. an interesting graph is one including directvobsub, because it embeds the subtitles directly into the video stream, as opposed to it being done by the playback program.

So I'm slowly starting to understand! Although the word 'graph' isn't the word that pops to mind when I see that process. 'Path' is closer.

I see people talk about graphedit and such - how does it sit in the picture? Is one allowed, under whatever circumstances, to specify which path through the various components the stream is going to take?

no, you cant use an external graph in GBPVR, actually, GBPVR prints its graph in a log file, if you are wondering the exact path that is taken for your files.

So it is 'sometimes' possible to specify which path the stream takes, just not in GBPVR? Or is it strictly a diagnostic tool, used when one is trying to figure out why something is going wrong?

it is possible in other applications

but in terms of GB-PVR, its strictly for diagnostics... to help people figure out what codecs are causing their system trouble.
