kricker Wrote:Sounds like the choppy video is definitely a codec issue. In my experience it is hard to get a ticker like on CNN to scroll smoothly. A lot of people had luck with the nvidia decoders, which haven't been updated in years or the Dscaler decoders. Personally I like the one I posted a link to earlier. It has always given me great playback with good quality. I couldn't really tell it apart from the nvidia decoders, and it was more reliable. I use it every day Wink

I was just doing a little poking around on the wiki . . . it appears that DirectX 9.0c can also cause these problems and backing up to 9.0b is the cure. I think I may give that a shot before mucking about with a bunch of codecs and the such . . . anyone using this board had this problem with DirectX 9.0c????

Thanks!

I use DirectX 9.0c every day Smile I even have the web installer saved so I can update easily every few months.

Hmmm, interesting. Well . . . it seems to have fixed my problem! Sortta . . . I replaced the crystal.dll and got the following results:

*) VMR9 Custom renderer it was much better but still kinda choppy.

*) VMR9 Full Screen Exclusive cleaned it right up - even the scroll on CNN is pretty fluid (maybe a microsecond stutter occasionally).

*) EVR - this option is not supported on my system.

*) Overlay Manager - this gives a nice fluid display, most of the time. Basically it works fine as long as the on screen graphics aren't on the screen. Actually the tv content seems fine, I didn't discern any stuttering, but the scroll bar on CNN certainly does stutter.

I had tried all of these prior to replacing the crystal.dll and none had cleared up the problem, so the crystal.dll definitely did do something for me. I may still play with some other codecs though.

Now off to figure out how to zip up some log files so we can figure out why the confiuration page on my gbpvr doesn't work . . .

TTYL,

Steve

I find this interesting . . . We have a cheapie (paid $150-$200 a couple years ago for it) Polaroid DRM-2001G DVR that got us hooked on this DVR stuff. It's really short on options but it makes a gorgeous picture and it has no problem at all with the tickers on CNN, Fox News, etc.! It's just kinda amusing that a cheapie piece of consumer electronics with what I would imagine is significantly less resources and horsepower than what's in my HTPC can do this with ease! Of course it's not running Windows . . . yeah, blame Bill Gates, that's the ticket . . . Rolleyes

It looks fine to me! I got it working. On the Wiki it says to edit the config.xml file and to replace the channel guide value with 2. Well I did that and it didn't work. I recorded the original value, 5, and then started at 1 and figured I'd just step through and see if any made any differences . . . success on the very first try! Changning that value to 1 makes it display the channel number! Smile Something must've changed between the version the wiki was based on and the current version. I'd think this should be a toggle in the config program rather than making us edit the file directly.

I had more time to play tonight . . . I switched the remote type to MCE instead of Hauppauge and now more of the buttons work! Smile

One problem, if I press skip during a recorded program it jumps ahead a minute. If I press replay it jumps back 30 seconds. If I press forward or rewind it jumps ahead or back 10 seconds. OK, fine, but . . . If I hold those buttons down to make it jump ahead or backwards quickly then the system freezes up. Any one else have this problem?

It still might be a problem with quartz.dll in directX 9c. There are replacement files around that you can just switch only that .dll and it helps with the recovery after ff/rew

I've replaced the crystal.dll with the 9.0b 1.84mb version (which the wiki said the most people had the best luck with).

I've heard of the quartz.dll replacement, but never the crystal.dll.
