I am looking at getting DirecTV in the next month or so, and I'd like to continue using GBPVR instead of the boring PVR they provide. So.....

After much research, I found out that the newer DirecTV receivers have a USB connection on the back, and with this you can control some functions of the receiver. But in order to use this from a PC, you had to get a Serial-to-USB adapter and a null modem. Then you had to use a DB9 serial port on your PC.

As most of us know, a lot of PCs don't have DB9 serials on them anymore, but a ton of USB. So I found this cable: http://tinyurl.com/5d3uw3

Seems to me like it will work. I am hoping to try one out soon and see if it works. Just wanted to point it out to those on DirecTV that may want to look at it as well.

I have succesfully used Prolific based USB Serial adapters under XP and Vista. Most of the cheap ones seem to be based on this chipset.

However, what you wrote does not seem right as if there is USB (master) on the STB, you will need one at each end, if, instead, it is USB slave then a simple USB cable may work.

I would be surprised if the USB port on the STB had drivers for USB/serial and would automatically open a connected adapter to receive commands.
