Hey,
I've got the live TV to stream from my server to my clinet, but no matter what mix of decoders I use or what channel I try, the playback is always jumpy. This client is connected via wireless, which I know isn't supported, but my main wonder is that the wireless connection isn't being maxed during this time leading me to think that maybe something else is at fault. Both the server and client aren't maxing CPU usage either. I have tried with a wired client, and while it did play fine it was still jumpy, but this most likely is because of decoders. So while this does suggest it's the network connection, my origonal point remains, why isn't the wireless being maxed out.
Thanks.

Because wireless is very sensitive to distance and interference. Advertised speed for 802.11g is 54mbps, throughput in a normal home environment will likely max out at half that with excellent signal. Add a cordless phone, microwave and a couple of neighbors with wireless routers and really, don't bother streaming anything HD.

Well I'm mainly talking about SD signals, HD signals break much faster. I would of assumed that 802.11g would of been able to stream SD as I've streamed via normal methods similar file types.

Again, wireless is very sensitive to distance and interference. A good test for SD streaming would be if you could get perfect streaming playback of a high bitrate DVD ripped to VOB/MPG with no additional compression. If you've tried streaming SD through wired LAN and it still hiccups, then you might need to play around with your decoders and settings.

You might be able to get an idea about the speed of the wireless by ...

On the client, map a drive letter to a folder that contains a video.

do copy x:\blah.mp nul:

This will copy the video file and discard the file when it arrives at the client. You might copy a video that you know has a duration of 30 minutes and see how long the copy takes.

Good Luck
