It might be worth trying to install AC3Filter to see if the problem corrects itself.

I'm not sure if it was AC3Filter, as I also specified the codecs to use in the config rather than just system default (although I'm sure I had already tried that), but playback now works with sound, and timeshifting mode works, with no black screen also.
