I've just finished updating my digital tv lineup configuration so that
the GBPVR TV Guide contains only those channels that actually work
for me, e.g. I removed pay-per-view, HD channels, etc.

However, when I use Search Guide I still get shows in the results
that reference these removed channels. Is the only way to fix this
to somehow filter out these channels from my epg input file?
Or is there another alternative?

If I need to filter channels from the epg xmltv file, what general
purpose filter program is recommended?

GBPVR revolves around the EPG input file. You do need to take unwanted channels out of that file before it ever gets to GBPVR. I had the same problem with searches finding programs on channels I couldn't receive. With mc2xml, use the -c option and a channel .chl file. I don't use schedules direct, but I think you can just set up your lineup via the web interface and uncheck unwanted channels.

I believe sub has fixed this for the next release (due any time now). For now Dennit's advice is the only way, but if you wait a week or two and upgrade to 1.4.x the problem will just go away.

Actually, I wasn't sure if this problem was found in the default GBPVR search functionality. I found the problem in SearchWiz (before I understood how important the epg file is to what you see in GBPVR). IIRC, when I reported my problem solved (by fixing my epg file) JavaWiz indicated he was happy not to have to fix it in SearchWiz as it might slow it down (something about too many joins already in his DB queries).

So, I'd still suggest fixing the source so the epg file only has channels you actually receive/want. It will fix any problems with plugins. Plus, I'm not sure how sub will do the rewrite, but even if the search returns only active channels, the programme and channel data is likely to remain in gbpvr.db3, slowing things down.

Not all EPG sources can be limited in this way. But I do agree, if you can limit your EPG download to only the channels you want, that will certainly be best on several fronts.
