I just bought this nifty lil remote http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...0418068342
I got it because it has easy mouse functions and means I can avoid VNC most of the time. However the buttons dont appear to be labeled exactly like the hauppage remote I have now. Is there a program that I can run that will tell me the IR code (i think it is device & button number) that I am getting from each button so I can figure out how to remap it?

looks like keyboard emulation, any software come with it? it has programmable keys so i'd think it does despite what the ad says...
so it may be HID style remote, what category does it show up under in device manager?

Entries show up under HID, Keyboard and Mouse. And I can tell that many of the buttons do exactly as they are labeled i.e. Enter , cursor keys, ESC, etc..
However some that do ODD things or nothing at all are not labeled with standard key labels so I would like to find a program that would show me the IR data that arrives so I can figure how to map it. Some of them I can just open a notepad and see but many do not create a character in notepad.

You may not need that IR code, there is a program under
C:\Program Files\Devnz\GBPVR\KeyMappings\showkey.exe

If you run that and press the buttons which you are unsure of, and it should show what key (or key combination) is being called by each button.

Thanks that is a pretty good start. It does give me key names like MediaPrevTrack and LWIN and +%F1 -- but these are not names that appear in IRREMOTE.INI so maybe to remap them I will need to use EventGhost or IR Server? Hopefully it is possible to remap them because the Power Key turns off my computer which is not really very useful :-)
It is really handy to have a remote mouse so hopefully the rest of the buttons can be made useful.

from the "run" command running "notepad debug.txt"

there is a section in irremote.ini for this command that will dump the key press for each recognised button into notepad.

Not sure if this helps or not...

I dont think key names is going to get me there. From what I can make of irremote there is a section that maps keynames to number codes for each device ID. I think I will need to determine my decvice ID and the numers associated with each key.

After that I can use those keynames to map actions within PVRX2 and hulu, netflix etc...

So if anyone knows of a program I could run that will give me numbers verses names I would greatly appreciate it. I have not found anything from web searches but you have to know what to look for to find things like this :-)

irremote.ini is the configuration file for Hauppauge controllers. If your controller is based on the same system, there is lots of information available for you, and I can steer you towards it. OTOH, when I first looked at this thread, I concluded that your "nifty lil remote" was not a Hauppauge controller. Try the "notepad debug.txt" test and tell us what happens. If it works, maybe you have a clone.

I spent some time trying to set up my media keyboard and commands like "MediaPrevTrack" remind me of some of the info located during that attempt. You may want to explore how to control and remap buttons for media keyboards (if it's not Hauppauge based).

it is not a Hauppauge, it is some sort of mce w/mouse clone. The notepad test does not provide a keystroke for manny of them. A number of the keys are immediately grabbed by windows and executed before they get to notepad. There is one key in particular I would sure like to get to work tho. SHOWKEY lists it as MediaPlayPause. Anyone have any suggestions on how I might get it to work as a play/pause key in gbpvr? the cursor keys and enter keys work fine. Vol+/- is working fine I remapped the color keys as windows hot keys so they are not an issue any longer. Next step is to try to get the media keys to work.

It's working just like a multimedia keyboard key. I've seen various solutions for using those predefined keys. If no one helps here, I'd suggest googling the key command names (MediaPlayPause, etc.) along with "keyboard". If that doesn't work, be aware that there is a second option. You can change the key that GBPVR responds to by changing the appropriate XML file in GBPVR\KeyMappings.
