Hello!

I first tried to remove the old installation which got corrupted and won't start, keeping the processors at 100% load. Unfortunately, the unistallation program didn't work (for me anyway).

Then, I stopped all Windows XP programs and clicked the installer to install on top of the old installation. Installation proceeded very fast, till the message "0 seconds of installation remain" (or something like it, sorry, memory fails me often). and there installation stays anchored. There is a small (about .75 mm) gap persisting between the blue bar and the right leg of the bar's rectangular frame. I gave it 10+ minutes to finish each time I reinstalled, to no end.

Then, I deleted Devnz off the C: drive and went into the Registry to delete GB-PVR's fields. But this is an interminable job in itself, since GB-PVR embeds itself into an incredible number of fields. I think it took me about 3/4 of an hour to delete a quarter of what is to be deleted.

What am I doing wrong? Have anyone else encountered this or any similar problem?

Thanks, S.

Probably shouldn't have got as far as editing reg manually before asking but try running:

sc delete "gb-pvr recording service"

from command prompt, see if that's successful then try re-installing GBPVR.
You will need admin privileges I think.

Just a tip for manual uninstallation: there is a small program called "Registry Crawler" which can search and delete in the registry. I'v had to do a manual uninstall myself on a couple of occations when gbpvr got FUBAR.

Thank you, guys.

Steeb: Yeah, cleaning the registry is dicey and extremely tedious, but I am an old hand at that. Unfortunately, GB-PVR is not exactly adept at cleaning up after itself and problem registry entries remain after uninstalling/outright deleting. GB-PVR is a good program thought, producing superbly clear pictures with my Avermedia Duet A188 receiver.

Reddwarf: That's exactly what I had to do. No matter how many times I uninstalled/deleted the program, reinstallation failed. The most probable reason therefore might be corrupted registry entries because all other troubleshooting trials failed.

Again, thank you BOTH for the suggestions. S.

I know :o, too much experimenting and gbpvr becomes impossible both to install and uninstall and one feel really trapped. Tough measures required Big Grin

I think I found why GB-PVR can't be reinstalled. I used Registry Crawler (thank you, Reddwarf). It is interesting that GB-PVR occupies about 60 registry entries under GB-PVR and about, get this, 1800 under GBPVR. Now, Registry Crawler was able to wipe out all of the 1800 and about 50 of the GB-PVRs. What it could not, were about 10 GB-PVRs that exclusively pertain to the Recording group in GB-PVR. They simply cannot be overwritten by any means, manually or automated. I used other registry cleaners, to no avail. The problem is that all of them invoke regedit.exe in some way. regedit.exe still is incapable of wiping off recalcitrant and entrenched entries, and that is why GB-PVR's installer gets stuck when meeting the remaining entries that cannot be overwritten. We will need a cleaner that can do the radical job. Have to look around. S.

Have you tried to change the permission on these registry entries? Some of them may be protected, try right-clicking on one and choose Permissions.
