I set up an old computer about three weeks ago to try and run gbpvr so I can get rid of my tivo and I can have all of my dvds in one place. I tried Mythbuntu first but I could not get it set up for the life of me and I did not have time to learn a new os. Once I found this software I knew that this software is the best freeware for my wants.

My computer specs are:

XP all updates and clean install
GBPVR 1.4.7
ABIT NF-7
AMD XP 3200
1 gig of ram
on board sound
Hauppauge Roselyn
Nividia GeForce fx 5500
120 gb hd

My cable signal is a standard analogue signal.

My problem is I know nothing about filters, mux, or codecs and I am running into an live tv play back problem. The playback on live tv is very choppy and has alot of artifacts, it is not watchable at all. If I record and play back the recordings they look fine. Also if I turn off live preview the live tv play back looks ALOT better with no chop but I cannot stand the delay in changing channels. DVD's seem to play fine but have a little interlacing issues.

I have have been messing with this system for a couple weeks in my spare time but with my lack of knowledge on codecs I feel like I am just going in circles when I change them.

Can anyone suggest any fixes or settings that can get me out of this slump?
I was also wondering if I can set this computer up as a server and client at the same time? Does it have enough power to be a server?

Thanks for any help you can give me!!

I do have another computer I can use, I also have an ATI 9800 pro card that I can swap out for the fx 5500. Do you think the problems I am having are hardware, codec, or setting related? Any help would be great. Thank you in advance.

Its most likely decoder related.

If you reproduce the problem, and post the pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log, I'll see if anything stands out.

Sub,

Thank you for replying to my thread. I have attached three sets of logs.

First set is GBPVR with default decoders and live preview enabled. The issues I have with these settings are as follows.
- Very choppy live tv playback
- Very choppy audio that cuts out alot although it seems to keep in sync with the video playback

Second set is GBPVR with default decoders and live tv DISABLED. The issue I have with these settings are as follows.
- Live TV playback seems really slow
- Audio does not skip but it is way out of sync with live tv.

Third set is GBPVR with default decoders and live preview enabled. The issues I have is in regards to playing a video that I have ripped via a GBPVR plugin.
-When I try and play a video I ripped to an ISO file, nothing happens at all just a black screen
I was always able to watch these ISO files before and never had any problems now I cannot watch them.

If you have any ideas on how to fix the issues above I would love to get this program up and running. Thank you for your time.

What happens if you change the deinterlacing on the misc tab from encoder pass through to none?

I'm pretty sure its related to the decoder you're using. In those logs you have them set to 'system default', which effectively tells windows to pick whatever random decoders it can find. I'd explicitly try other decoder options.

Thank you to all that have helped with my problem.

Sub,

Do you have any suggestions on what decoders tend to give good results? I dont know anything about decoders? Also any idea why the video wouldnt play back in the 3rd set of logs?

JonnyCam,

I turned the interlacing to "none" and I got the following results:
-The picture seemed like it was "soft" almost like it was hazy. It was not real clear
-Also when there was fast motion you could see black an white bars in the picture. Sometimes you could see the bars on the outside edges of objects as they moved across the screen.
-There was no audio at all.

Agian thank you to all who have taken time to reply. Do you have any other ideas of what would be good decoders or settings to us? Thank you.

Sub,

Sorry for the late reply I had a pretty busy week. Thank you for replying to my last post. The only options I have in my video decoder under mpeg-2 playback are:

-System default
and
-ffdshow decoder

I have tried both of these decoders and niether one of them result in watchable live tv playback.

Do you have any suggestions on a good decoder to download. Thank you for your time.

The system default is probably ffdshow, so you've probably only tried that one decoder.

I dont know, maybe try http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm
