Remote buttons and Keyboard keys

While trying to puzzle out why the keyboard volume controls showed icons in PVRX2 and remote buttons didn't, I soon found that the remote is controlling system sound and the keyboard (when app is in focus) only the app sound - obvious with the Windows mixer panel alongside. Why can't I send the app codes instead when the program is running?

I have used Translator to map various combinations of Left/Right, +/-, ^Z/^X, with or without curly brackets, but the behaviour doesn't change. Any ideas?

When I moved the PC from a VGA monitor to a HDMI TV (not the one it's intended for), volume icons started appearing when I pressed the remote buttons. These appear to be system ones, square-shaped speaker icons at the bottom of the screen, rather than the bars shown in PVRX2. This is a solution of sorts. Is it really not possible for a remote to send application-specific volume commands?

I don't know why they didn't show before. When I switched to the TV's VGA port, they were still appearing. Now I'm back on the old VGA monitor, they've gone again. The monitor has a lower native resolution than the TV, so that may have something to do with it. The intended target TV will have HDMI or VGA connection, but it's not full HD, so the problem may crop up again.
