I am very new to the world of PVR and have chosen to use GBPVR since it supports my Hauppauge 350 card with the nice quality built in video out that I wanted.
QUESTION: Can I use the GBPVR interface to play my older recorded Mpegs?...or will it only play video that I have recorded using the GBPVR? I have tried to play some older musicvideos downloaded as torrents in MPEG format, but nothing happens? Is there some way to work around this and get them to play using my 350card with video out?
QUESTION 2 ( I guess this is the real dumb one) Can I ever use the GB interfaced to play video and movies recorded in other formats...avi from torrents for example? What do I need to do to convert and make them accessible through the interface?
THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ANYONE WHO TAKES THE TIME TO ANSWER QUESTIONS LIKE MINE.

you can play any videos thru gbpvr.
for the 350 you can only play mpgs, and they have to match your region, ie only NTSC 350s can play NTSC mpgs and only PAL 350s can play PAL mpegs, this is probably the reason your music videos arent working.

q2. not on the 350, but if using different output (monitor, gfx card) thne yes, any video file that supports directshow filters (mpeg, avi, divx, xvid, mov, realtime, etc).

I think the issue pointed out by reven is because the tv-out has an mpeg decoder in front of it. Because of this you wouldn't be able to play any other type of video through it.

The way I see it, there are 2 solutions. Either have the signal recoded on-the-fly to mpeg, which will probably cause a lot of system load and I wouldn't know how to do. Or recode the files to mpeg, which you should be able to do with video editting programs. On linux there are special recode programs that don't have any other purpose than change the format, so there are bound to be some for windows too. You should be able to find some with not too much trouble.

I use TMPGENC to re-encode other MPEG files and use the excellent My Videos plugin to play them through GB-PVR on my 350. I find that most MPEG files on the net are NTSC and I have a PAL 350 card.

cameluk,

Is TMPGENC free? I've been to their site, referenced from the mediachance.com site (of dvd-lab fame -- my new favorite dvd authoring tool).

Thanks,

John

Last time I looked at TMPGENC, it would do MPG1 and MPG2 for a thirty day trial period. After 30 days, MPG1 would still work, but MPG2 would not.

reven,
could this be why, even when I copy my NTSC SVCD and DVD MPG files to my hard drive and try to play them through the a NZ bought PAL PVR350 TV Out, I get lots of skipping, dropped frames?

Hasso

i never tried a svcd (which is mpeg2 if i remember), but all my ntsc mpeg1 files said they were like 12seconds long and were blank. but yeah if they are ntsc playing thru pal they wont work, there maybe a patch or hack or something for this (i think i read somewhere once that you could alter it, never tried it thou).
