Just thought id post my findings for people using npvr and xp playing mepg2-ts recorded files

If you are having ghosting issues or generally crap playback
Download the latest FFdshow-tryouts decoder
look for the newest file the download link on the webpage does not link to the newest version
(ffdshow_beta-rev3152_20091209.exe)

under codecs set mpeg to Libmepeg2(its set to disabled when you install)
go down to overlay tick the box
inside the overlay>output>untick all apart from NV12
set interlace flag to force bob(may be different for you so try weave also)
set field order >topfield first
I also set allow output format changes during playback for fiddling

Interesting things i found
ffdshow playback in evr cpuload was only 7%
where as cyberlink or nvidia with hardware decoding enabled using vmr cpu load was 14%
plus vmr aspect ratios dont work with the nvidia driver bug

So if you are worried about load on cpu dont be
This is the first time i have ever found the ffdshow decoder to be as good if not better than either cyberlink or nvidia

Please post back with your findings or if you have anything to add good or bad

That is still a really old/obsolete tryout, I'd recommend the svn builds

setting top field will only be good for some countries...[ntsc mostly]
in newer builds, avcodec also works for mpeg2...[finally] but i suspect libmpeg2 is still better with livetv..avcodec is multi-threaded, libmpeg2 is not..

interlace box should be auto, bob cuts resolution and weave is like none...auto picks correct one based on content..[lets video card decide]
but it's only as good as the card/driver set you run it on...setting bob may help with bad drivers..so whatever looks best to you...
but look at details closely before you decide...with lots of diff content...some will look bad with one method, some with the other...why auto is needed..

These are my settings that work well for me on pal
weave gives you sawtooth edges
bob has always worked well on the content in NZ
I always setup using the News with the ticker tape, I find once this is going smooth 99% of content goes fine

So yes you are probably right try lots of content and it depends on your country

I dunno... I just cycled through ffdshow, ATI Mpeg-2, and Microsoft DTV-DVD decoders, watching the same content in each case, and I absolutely can't tell the difference. All 3 seem to give exactly the same output. I figured I would see differences, but would be unsure which was actually better... but I see no differences at all.

since they all give over deinterlacing to the video card, of course they all look same...Smile
as should any decent hardware accelerated codec..

so really it's more about your video card's driver and deinterlacing section of card...
if they work, almost all hw accel codecs will also..

problem with forcing bob is, sd will look really bad..hd you won't notice as much..
