NPVR and Decoder Question

For learning purposes, what is the reason that I should use both the audio and video decoders of ffdshow? I have no problem using both for audio and video if I have to because I really like the options ffdshow (audio) gives me. However, I've been having major problems with the ffdshow video. It either crashes npvr, dvd navigation isn't working, or I get a black screen. I've really only had good luck with the MainConcept (HCW) MPEG-2 Video Decoder. Maybe I'll add the video decoder to my list of problems to solve because I don't want to give up the audio decoder which I'm still trying to get working for my AC/DC DVD.

Is there a way you can post small DVD sample with not working menu? Becouse i was never been able to reproduce it with FFDshow in use.
About black screen - this can happend if you GPU (drivers) have problems with certain colorpaces - for example older integrated intel GPU cannot display NV12.
And nPVR crash? Any error message?

I'll see what I can do for posting the non-working DVD menu in my AC/DC DVD. As for the black screen (from my Eagles Hotel California DVD-A disc), it seems odd that my laptop with the integrated intel gpu works fine when not using ffdshow (don't have ffdshow installed), but my htpc with the ATI HD 5450 and the latest drivers displays the black screen with ffdshow and not with other decoders. I was hoping to reproduce the crash (it was some kind of unhandled exception I wasn't able to expand the description in the dialog), but I can't reproduce it now.

OK, now I'm going crazy. I tested a video that I made (converting my parents 8mm film) that has menu's and that one works using ffdshow video but does not work with the MainConcept decoder. Not sure what to think about that, but I think I need a drink.

Have you tried Arcsoft or Cyberlink decoders? I think ther are more reliable than ffdshow and MainConsept (which I never got any good results from).

Arcsoft gave me the black screens. I tried the CyberLink Video Decoder (PDVD10) but the menus did not work. Then I tried the CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD10) and the menus worked for the most part for all three videos that I was testing them against. Thanks.

Now if I can just figure out my original problem with the audio. No matter what decoder I select, it will use ffdshow audio (even on my home video that I created.)

Surest thing would be to uninstall the whole ffdshow.

I uninstalled ffdshow (SAF5), and now it gets stuck at the introduction again and doesn't display the menus. One thing that I find interesting and maybe you decoder gurus can explain; is if I set the DVD decoders to the Microsoft DTV-DVD video/audio decoders, npvr gets stuck in the introduction loop and cannot get past it (this is with the AC/DC Live at Donnington). If I play that mounted image through WMP then everything plays fine. The menus look great and the audio actually works.:confused:

I did.

After uninstalling SAF5, I soon realized I really need SAF5 to be installed. Ffdshow to bitstream TrueHD and DTS-HD and the added ability to playback my .mkv movies. So, I re-installed it. It was getting late for me last night so I didn't get to do much testing of it. Plus I still need to make a small file of the non-working DVD menus.
