I'm having dificulty streaming to my XP netbook. This is not related to any of my ipad querries.
I've tried changing the default to 7640 but still same result.
I've also got firewall exceptions for vlc.
What's my problem?

Thanks

The default streaming port for NEWA is 7648. You must have this port opened on your servers firewall and if you want to access outside of your home network you need to have that port opened on your router as well and forwarded to your server. If you changed the port....that is fine so long as it is not being used by something else on the system. You still need to specifically open the port within windows firewall on the server.

Yep, that did it, opened the port on my router.
Thanks UJB!

but I can stream live TV over my LAN but from outside I get an "error" in the bottom pane of VLC.
what can I do to chase this down?

UPDATE:
If I clicked the stream now at the left above channel logo on LAN yeah I could stream because the bandwidth is about 6-7Mps.
But selecting the program and streaming thru VLC at the lower 256kbs works.
Now I've got to think about popping an extra $10/mth to get my upload speed from 256 to 528.

Again, thanks UJB. My cell provider is willing to offer me 5 hrs of liveTV for $5/mth,,,,HA!

You could try reducing the ration (i.e. set to .25) which will lower the amount of data going over the pipe and then scale it up on the receiving end...

..if you are using H264 transcoding it should scale up to a decent viewing size on the receiving client.
