Yeah, I guess even Dolby Digital and dts are still technically 20th century. But they barely existed for consumer use, if at all, when I last purchased a home theater amp, a Denon AVC-2800, 20 years ago. I'm still on the fence about this low-end digital receiver (Sony STR-K740P)... it's not bad for what I paid, $0, but the Denon is clearly superior hardware. I guess I have to decide how big a deal it is to have digital decoding in the receiver vs. having a software decoder downmix to analog Dolby prologic.
I will do some more experimenting with DTS... perhaps as thisheat suggests, I should try just sending a real dts signal to the receiver instead of worrying about the windows test.
