Freezing Problem and EPG Question

Just got NextPVR running on a new computer, and have a problem and a question.

Problem -flipping channels sometimes works great, but often results in NextPVR freezing for 20 or 30 seconds before the new channel comes in.

Question -I had WMC running before, and am surprised NextPVR doesn't have a similar type walk-thru for setting up the EPG. The guides I've seen online look really arduous. Is there a link someone can share to the simplest set up instructions for the EPG?

I'm running NextPVR on a desktop in the USA with a HD Homerun Prime, if that matters.

thx,
Ross

problem - try a different video decoder. if you have windows 7, the microsoft dtv-dvd decoder works well. the problem you describe sounds typical to my experience with the ATI MPEG-2 decoder and the LAV Video Decoder.

question - use schedules direct. register for an account, but don't bother setting up a lineup at the site, all the lineup config is done within nextpvr setup. In NextPVR go to Settings->Channels, pick your first channel; in the properties for the channel you'll select Schedules Direct and click on "Manage Lineups" in the lineup dropdown. Once you've added the lineup you need, map the channel. when that's done, NPVR should offer to try and auto-map the rest of your channels; if it doesn't, hit "Bulk Map" and map the channels to the EPG data. It's a little tedious, but you should only have to do it once.

Thanks Johnson! I'll try your advice.

Regarding schedules direct, isn't that a pay service? I thought there were free ones....

Yes, Schedules Direct is a pay service. It's pretty cheap though, and the easiest North American EPG source to use. Alternatively you could look into mc2xml, which "acquires" it's data from the Microsoft WMC service.

I'm trying to make the suggested changes -dtv-dvd decoder and mc2xml for the EPG. Neither is listed within the relevant pickboxes. Is there something I need to do to enable them? I have Windows 8.1, if that matters.

Available decoders include ffdshow, MPV, Cyberlink, P2G, and ffdshow raw.
Available EPGs include XMLTV, DVT/ATSC, and schedule direct

I've tried picking each EPG and then hitting "update EPG", but no schedules seem to load.

Typically, you run a program to create a file containing xmltv data ... nextpvr reads that file and populates the epg

To setup mc2xml follow the instructions here.

I'm downloading mc2xml from http://mc2xml.hosterbox.net/, and Norton is giving me the message:
"mc2xml.exe Threat name: WS.Reputation.1"

I've never had Norton actually reject a file before. Not sure what to do here. Is this a bad report by Norton, or might this file actually be a threat?

mc2xml is not necessary legal in all countries and so the source for the binaries does hop around.

as Martin suggests, that means mc2xml.exe is flagged in their database as somehow "bad", not that there's anything actually malicious in the file. most possible uses of MC2XML involve violating someone's EULA or ToS, so that's probably why Norton is flagging it. Schedules Direct is 100% legal and legit.
