Unable to play recordings on OpenELEC Isengard version

Looking in the DB they are all just d:\*** (e.g. D:\Media\NPVR\Daniel Tigers Neighborhood\Daniel Tigers Neighborhood_20150612_11001130.mp4)

I already do a bunch of substitutes in advancedsettings.xml for other paths. So would this be?

Yes that could be correct except Kodi is case specific for the source. If it doesn't work when you send the logs show it trying to play and also show it working from the Video Library.

OK - i'll give that a try tonight when the kids are in bed. I'll be interested to see a response to Shane's question. Is it possible sub could fix this or is it a more general KODI problem?
