Yea, I set it to AC3 and just hoped it would do 5.1 even though the spec sheet says 2.0 and that's what you heard from the devs too.  Oh well.  I switched to H265 and the encoder now automatically coverts a 1080i 60 signal to 1080p 30 even if the encoder is set to encode size same as input. So that actually fixes the problem with my Vero 4K+ even better because now the new channels I have that are 720p can be passed as 720p rather than having the cable box scale them up.  I'm sure the TV is better at scaling than the cable box, so I'd rather have it done there.

As far as I can tell I am.  Both VLC and Kodi report H.265 for the stream video (they said H.264 before I switched).  The outside of the box says H264, but the instruction manual says H264/H265 encoder.  The Amazon page has three entries you can choose from: H264 Encoder, H265 Encoder, Video Decoder.  I definitely paid for the cheapest one (H264) so either they used to be firmware locked to H264 only and aren't anymore or I was shipped the wrong thing.

Here's the Amazon page just for reference.  As I said, it was more expensive than the H264 encoder direct from China, but 3 days versus 6 weeks made it worth it.

P.S. The stenciling on the case is for the H264 version. There's no model number on it at all anywhere. I'm afraid to ever update the firmware now for fear of losing the H265.

My case has no identification either so you may have lucked out. There is no link for firmware updates anyway.
