Just to say - I hadn't had the jerky playback after skipping since a rebuild some time back, but now that I'm switching to HD (and so switching codec from intervideo to cyberlink) the problem was back! I've just switched to the QUARTZ.DLL from DirectX 9.0b and its fixed the problem for me again.

I'm tempted to try the Microsoft patch mentioned earlier but I think I'll leave well enough alone - Other than GBPVR this pc is used for looking at photos, a little bit of web browsing and very occaisionally Mame32 so I think I'll leave it now its working!

FYI - WinXP SP3 fixes this issue - if you try to install the MS Patch after SP3 it tells you there is a more recent version on the system. And it works!

Is the quartz.dll switch still relevant? Does XP SP3 or some other hotfix or DirectX version resolve the MPEG2 stutter?

In my experience, yes, it is still relevant. On my older machine (AMD 2500+) SP3 does not fix the issue. Nothing performs as well and without the stutter as with the old quartz.dll.

I needed the "b" version as well on an older machine (Sempron 2800/SiS chipset), but it seems to make no difference on my new 780G system.

I assume it's not relevant on Vista? I've not had issues with it since using Vista instead of XP. That said, I also have a vista install on a 780G system.

I had a similar problem on my Windows XP SP3 system - the following Microsoft hotfix appears to have resolved the issue
by updating DirectX quartz.dll from 6.05.2600.5933 to 6.05.2600.6010:

You cannot play an AVI file in Windows XP after you install security update 975560
