Recording service LOOKS like it works, but

I've run in to this several times. Everything looks fine but after a certain point all recordings are simply zero-byte mpegs on my hard drive. If you go in to "recordings" or "Xrecord" everything looks OK but when you go to play the video it either immediately goes back to the previous window (Recordings) or does nothing at all (Xrecord). Nothing is labelled "Failed" and the Recording status moves on to whatever is next and is not locked up. It just creates zero-byte files.

Anyone know what could be wrong? This happens about once a week. Here's the only problems I've been able to find. The last one is closest to the time I THINK it stopped creating real files:
