I currently run NPVR v4, however, I will be building a new PC and am thinking to install v5. I understand that v5 is web based. I am curious if there are plans to make the service available from any internet source. From the  Install Information page:

Windows Client
The windows client, nextpvr.exe, is included in the 'client' subdirectory. At this stage it can only connect to NextPVR running on the same Windows machine.

Or perhaps I don't fully understand the statement...with v4 I can connect remotely (from phone or work PC) via internet to my NPVR and schedule/watch recordings and live TV. However,  I cannot, understandably, make any changes to the settings of NPVR installed on my PC. With v5, if remote access is ever made available would I then be able to access the NPVR settings? Not sure why I would want to do that but am curious.

Also, what would be/is the main advantage to switching to v5, as v4 works perfectly for me?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I start from the last question that others may want to integrate.

Overall NPVR5 is a better TV server, faster, more compatibile and it is not limited to Windows.

You can configure it remotely being web based, but, at the time is not a 100% replacement of NPVR4 it lacks the remote native client for example.

The windows client, nextpvr.exe, is included in the 'client' subdirectory. At this stage it can only connect to NextPVR running on the same Windows machine.

Yep, the native client, at the moment, works only on the same machine where the server is installed, but you have an endless string of working clients to watch the TV remotely, either from a PC

Kodi is the more commonly used and the most adapted for newbies but you cn use MPC-HC, VLC, Pot Player, even the Windows media center (using dvblink with the iptv client)

or from a phone

There is a native client, or you can use anything able to manage the IPTV streams. (personally I use IPTV Extreme)

Also remember that,if you want to test it before ditching NPVR4 you can, just change the standard port of NPVR5 (8866) to something else like 8867, then you can use both the servers alternatively (or ever at the same time if your tv card/usb-stick is a dual/multiple tuners).

To be clear al settings on NPVR5, are managed via a web browser, so they are available from any machine connected to your lan

Configuration is web based so you would simply use the web browser.  Likely remote recording scheduling would be something you would do more often then configuring.  In v5 I do all my searching and scheduling in the web.

Overall for streaming v5 is much more stable than v4.    I like being able to run the server on linux the backend can basically run until sub updates to a new version.  Uptime is months.  IPTV tuners are also much enhanced.

From a client perspective likely Kodi users see the most benefit of improved streaming and new functionality, but overall the array of client support is fantastic in V5.  While many miss the Windows NextPVR.exe on remote PC's but I never found the custom streaming protocol error free, and it would lock up with wifi, the http clients are all much more robust.    Besides for me why run NextPVR on a PC when you can use a $50-$100 device with better quality media playback, remotes and low power.  NextPVR clients can even run directly from some Smart TV with Android or Roku.

The missing pieces, integrated Windows analog support (it works ok in Linux with some tuner), plugins in NextPVR, and some softcam support.

Thanks guys!

I'll probably try v5 and see how it goes. I won't be disabling the old PC for a while yet so I'll be able to experiment.
