I have been playing XVids and DivX files on GBPVR for a year now and it works beautifully. I even play them over my network from another machine over 100baseT. As Sub said, FDDShow is a CPU pig, so I would not even think about using it on a Celeron 800. You can't compare VLC as it uses it's own codecs. a more fair comparison would be to windows media player. I am using a codec pack locted at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec.htm
It works 100% on all the video files I play. You might want to give that a go.
As for the aspect ratio, that has never failed me. As your video is all choppy, then I'd suspect that your setup (codecs, other procseses taking cpu cycles, etc) is causing all your problems including the aspect ratio.
