I was wondering how I can view (and maybe edit) the GBPVR database. I tried OpenOffice 2.0 with their new "base" module. It wouldn't open the database and a brief look around the forums gave me no insight as to why.

As far as I know, OpenOffice talks HSQL(DB), not Microsoft Access (which is the format of GBPVR). You would need an application that can view Microsoft Access Databases. Preferrably Microsoft Access.
I'm not always right

When you access the database with access GBPVR may hang.

Wouldn't it be nice if we were using a more feature reich database server for this application? Something like mysql or even firebird. The more I read the more I hear about the number of "don't do"'s with MS access.

I guess I should have made this comment in the wish list forum...... Smile

Some people have used MSDE etc with GB-PVR. Realistically, I'm only ever going to ship it using an access database.

Hey Sub,

Any chance at building the db connectivity pieces to be independent of the database system? I tried upgrading to SQL Server 2000 sp4 and it worked in part but not in total. Every time I tried getting to the list of my scheduled recording it returned "rs.oid" which is a field used in the table. And a few other places. I tried playing with data type in sql to see if I could get that to closer match to the access setup. If you have all of the data access bits in one class that is used for access through out the system. I would be willing to re-write it plus include upgrade scripts for the base system. The plug-ins would be the problem areas well the ones that don't read the config file. But if they used the public api to retrieve data even create their own tables/queries in the main db that would allow for a simple upgrade process. The biggest problems I have with msAccess is the memory it will take as time go one (I have seen 5 year old apps with 2gig mdb's which was/is the max access supports), then there is the speed sql/msde is much faster, you can also then use sql agent jobs to schedule things instead of firing off batch files at the end of the process to run comskip. I fire off comskip on my sql server hourly to process files so if I record two shows in a row there is only one going at a time. It's a separate machine for me because my little mini-itx box couldn't handle doing it all. It does everything else fine I just didn't want to burden it at times when it's trying to transcode and rip out the commercials.

My wife's computer has MS Access but mine doesn't. When I need to look at gbpvr's mdb files from my computer I use MDB Viewer Plus. It's very basic, a single EXE file, no installer.
