Error: Failure playing back file

Although i can watch tv, i cannot pause rewind or record. Upon clicking the pause button, i receive the message "Error: Failure playing back file". the feed appears to be bypassing my hard disc. The show appears to be recording and gives a message that it is, but the error message appears when i try to play during recording and after recording.
