that corbonite product sounds good.

but here is my take on the people here, we are geeks, and dont like to pay for things that we could get for "free", meaning, we might not pay for it, but we spend time getting it to work. and also, being geeks, we have no problem buying hardware, since it is concrete, you can hold it in your hand and say... I bought this, it is worth something. :p

but hey, its always nice to see a well done productSmile

Acronis has been worth every penny - If just to save the endless little tweaks you do to personalise your system.

I do DVD's for mp3's and any tv i want to archive (Panet Earth, that kinda stuff)

Photo's get duplicated about three of four times, mirrored on different pc's and drives - i cant EVER lose any!!

The real winner though is Mozy Which gives 2GB FREE storage on their servers, encryption can be with your own key and unlimited storage isnt that expensive.
It has a very simple service that constantly updates any files that fit into its clever categories (emails, docs, spreadsheets, pics, music etc etc)
It automates the backup of the really crucial stuff and keeps it up to the minute, and access to the backups is by a zip file you download of selected files/folders. Definately worth a look

For $49.95 per year, Carbonite will automatically back up everything on your PC over the Internet. There is nothing to learn, no hardware to buy, and no limit on backup storage. Sign up today and try Carbonite for FREE!

Acronis is 49.95 forever and has a lot more functionality.

I never trust that any of these new "web2.0" startups are going to still be around in a few months.

Good point, but they can compliment DVD or acronis backups by being bang up to date.

if you back up once a month with Acronis then at worst you would lose a months information, with online backup the worst case scenario (assuming your online archive disappeared) is still one month.

On the free give away of the day page they are offering a free backup software.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/titan-backup/

I have never used it - but will give it a try. The price is right for today anyway.

I use Ghost - not the horrible Win version, the 600k dos executable!
I have used Ghost for years and years to clone hard drives - and that is its strength, exact clones in minutes so you can copy your C: drive to a bigger drive, swap them over, and the PC boots like nothing has happened.
I have two drives - I save a compressed image of one onto the other so if either dies I can replace it & copy the image back. No good if the whole PC was trashed, say in a fire, but then I also archive important stuff like family photos to DVD - they're so cheap...
I think for a home PC, external hard drive backups, raid solutions etc are complete overkill.
BTW synching your mobile phone with Outlook on the PC is a handy way to always have a backup of your contacts, emails, calendar etc and conversely if you loose your phone you can quickly copy eveything back to a new phone (I use Nokia PC suite).
