I have had some stability issues. Where GBpvr just freeze up on the main manu so only way to get out of it is to kill the process. That is not popular with the wife...

Well I have not reinstalled windows (xp mce) in the two years I've had the HTPC, so I guess that it's time to reformat the disc and start over.

I want something really stable for the htpc, so I'm thinking of going win 2000.
Does GBpvr run well on that OS, or is it better to install a minimalistic XP pro?

i would say at the moment with the new pvrx2 it is a bit more unstable
but im sure it will get better over the next few weeks
if the wife is that grumpy you might be better going back to 99.12 for a bit longer its not worth the grief to have a grumpy wife
i dont think the operating system will make that much difference as far as which one you use
i would more say do a fresh install of mce or xp pro(same thing really minus a few things you dont need)
a fresh install may help
i dont find mine crashes bugger all as long as i follow a few things

I run GB-PVR on Windows 2000 (thanks Sub) and have since I started using GB-PVR a couple of years ago. It works very well. I don't think there are that many differences between W2K and XP that it should matter much. Unfortunately, card manufacturers don't care to support an old OS, so not many cards have drivers for W2K. For instance, certain versions of the PVR-150 drivers don't work on W2K, but some do. Almost all the new cards don't support 2K. (Whether the driver would theoretically work is another matter, but unless you want to hack INFs to find out it doesn't matter.) As far as I know there aren't any ATSC cards with Win2000 support except the Dvico ones. (I had W2K when I started, and made sure everything I bought worked in Linux figuring that when W2K died off I would switch. GB-PVR still works and has kept me on Windows - I use Linux via VMWare - and is the only reason I'd think of buying XP.)

I use XP at work. I turned off themes and some other junk. I don't know if that matters, but I have no stability problems with XP. The largest source of problems is people browsing unsafely or installing a lot of junky applications. Problems with GB-PVR are often related to plugins or skins. So check those first. I can see being wary of Vista, but I see no reason to pick W2K over XP now, especially if you already own XP.

OK. I have had a tendency to try new applications for htpc purposes since I started this project. Thats the reason I think it's high time to make a clean break.

Thanks for the advice. Guess I go for the xp pro and try to restrict myself from trying the very latest releases (how hard could it be). Wink

This release is stable. It was just patched to 1.0.16 which fixed most of my issues. It is much more smooth than the last version.
