I was looking around the internet to figure out how to do this, and could not really find clear answers. I finally got it to work myself and thought I would share it with everyone since the steps are pretty straight forward.

Prerequsites: Windows Media Player 11 Installed
Step 1:
Download and Install 3vix trial codec. http://www.3ivx.com/
Then uninstall it right away. I know this sounds dumb but they change
Windows Media Player's registries to accept .mp4. You could probably edit it yourself but I found this easier and more reliable.
Step 2:
Download and install ffdshow codec. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow Just keep the defaults, they work fine.
Step 3:
Download and install haali media splitter http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
Defaults again are fine.
Step 4:
You should now be able to import h.264 movies into WMP11 video library. So now all you have to do is enable media sharing with your xbox 360 by clicking the library arrow and go to Media Sharing menu.

Works perfect you just need to make sure your movies are encoded correctly. Here are the rules for the encoding

Hope this helps

Did you try tversity? I can't remember if that does h.264 or not and it's been a while since I used it.

here's hoping for divx support in the fall dashboard update...

I never tried Tversity because I didn't need to transcode on the fly. Plus I only wanted to use WMP, I don't like having too many things running in the background if I can help it.
