Do we always have to shut down the MVP manually upon startup, or can we get it to work automatically?

kind of a pain to have to do it manually on every startup..

What you are dosing is stopping the services that make up the MediaMVP server.
If you change the services to Manual then you wont have to do it everytime you restart windows.
I cant access my PC right now, but if you go to My Computer / Manage / Services and Applications / Services then look for the MediaMVP services and change them to Manual instead of Automatic this will assist you from doing this job everytime.
