With experienced computer help, I have been trying to install an hvr1600 model 1181 on my computer in addition to the existing pvr150. I have 5 slots but the video card and fan covers one of them. The slots are all pci and my motherboard is an asus intel. When we install both cards, the computer reboots itself after 1-10 minutes on a random basis. I can get the system stable with either card but not with both. We have tried various slots and we have checked the new card on a different machine so it seems as if the tuner card is correct.

It is not a driver problem (although that was a problem earlier in the day) because I was able to uninstall the Hauppauge drivers. I am waiting until the system is stable before trying to reinstall the Hauppauge drivers from the CD with version 3.4A (the version applicable to my model of HVR1600)

To complicate the problem, we added 2gb of ram at the same time and about a week ago, I suddenly lost sound and my sndvol32.exe for no obvious reason. Before the installation, we discovered I had 2 sound cards, the one on the motherboard and an additional one. Sound was restored when I reinstalled sndvol32.exe and removed one of the sound cards. As far as I can tell, the sound problem is not the cause of the sporadic and frequent rebooting. My experienced help says the ram might be.

Does anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong or what we could try to fix it?

Maybe try to apply more conservative memory settings in the bios, esp. since you put in extra memory.
Check if the psu is strong enough. An extra card + extra memory ofcourse takes extra power.

As the day progressed, it looks like we will be considering a new motherboard. My computer expert likes AMD and ABIT in particular. Do you have any recommendations?

While the problem only became apparent when we installed the HVR1600, the problem was two-fold - both unrelated to gbpvr. The first problem was that the existing 451W power supply was malfunctioning and replacing it with a 650W power supply has sorted out the voltage irregularities. The second problem was the fan on the Nvidea card. It had stopped turning and was draining voltage. We have replaced it with an arctic cooling Accelero S2. Everything is running well now.
