After reading all the positive things about the MVP I thought I would be in plug-and-play heaven with this device -- no luck.

I have the Helius 86001 EM1 model from ebay. I've tried using the included dongle.bin (version 1.1.5 of gbpvr) and also the mvpmc 0.3.4 both of which WORK in the sense that I get the skin up and running and can browse around -- go to the tv guide -- go to recordings, but nothing plays. If I try to play a recording (generated on the analog side of my hvr-1600) the MVP either does nothing or it reboots. Could it be my recording settings?

Is there anyway I can try a test file of some sort?

When I go to the "Video Library" I can't seem to browse around at all. I just see the top level folders and can't play anything from there.

I can't play any MP3s using the MusicLibrary2 plugin.

Basically I can't do anything useful with my MVP.

I'm using the PVRX2.exe front end on the server side, if that matters.

Any ideas how to proceed?

I'm 99% sure that this is because of your firewall. You need to open PVRX2.exe for TCP and UDP.

When I go to Control Panel --> Windows Firewall it says it is turned Off. I manually added PVRX2.exe to the exemptions for good measure and it still doesn't seem to work. Is there a specific port or other firewall block you are referring to?

If you only have one firewall and it is off it doesn't matter, the other 0.99% is that you haven't turned off the Hauppauge services.

Okay it keeps getting stranger. Installed the Hauppage software and it would play my LIVETV.mpg file, but no other recordings. I think it must have something to do with my recording settings on the HVR-1600.

I thought the mvp was pretty robust in what it can handle in terms of media...

Please upload you GBPVR logs and we can have a look, I don't have a lot of room for guessing.

The MVP is quite robust with mpeg-2 recordings that will be made from the analog side, but you will have lots of problems with digital SD or HD via QAM or ATSC.

A significant aside .

Why is this so? How can the MVP tell the source that the mpeg-2 was generated from? Isn't an mpeg-2 file an mpeg-2 file.......

The short answer is there's a huge difference between transport stream (ts) and program stream (ps) recordings.

The main problem with MPEG2 files from digital devices in north america on the MVP is that they are often high definition, or contain AC3 audio streams. The MVP hardware can only play standard definition MPEG1/2 files with an MPEG1 Layer 2 audio stream. DVB countries tend to transmit most digital channels matching these requirements, so arent as much of a problem.
