On second thought, I ran the clip with VMR9 and it gets the same as in GB-PVR so it's a strong possiblity that it's not doing HA in gbpvr. So again, I ask why? I can make it do it easily in graphedit with EVR, but choosing EVR in GB-PVR, making sure that dxva is on in the regedit and that the default h.264 is cyberlink 8. Is the regedit no good for version 8?

Check which EVR directshow filter is being used. I have found that when you install applications, they register their own EVR filters in place of what was previously registered. My EVR filter is the Cyberlink one (can't remember the name off the top of my head).

I GOT IT!

But this is in Vista, haven't tried my original XP machine.

As stated earlier in this thread, it is the registry entry persistance of Cyberlink 8...it does NOT keep the DXVA checked when GB-PVR runs it. I couldn't get it to do it either no matter what. My next step was to try another decoder.. I used MPCdecoder for h.264 AND IT WORKED IN EVR AWESOME!!! Like 5% for 720p H.264 EVEN IN GB-PVR. PARTY TIME!

It doesn't like MPEG2 for some reason (hangs) so I elevated the ATI decoder merit value past the MPCDecoder one and it will use that instead now. Also, neither Cyberlink or ATI can get me HA but that's ok, something (H.264) is better than nothing. I believe that there's no EVR support in ATI and I'm not sure why Cyberlink won't do it.

That's great to hear you got it working, I haven't been able to get working hardware acceleration for mpeg2 working on my vista machine either, by chance do you have vista business, its what I'm using. I swear I heard a while back that vista home premium came with a dxva2 (evr friendly) mpeg 2 decoder from microsoft and that's what it used in mce for hd playback. I haven't investigated to far yet, I would bet if there a microsoft mpeg 2 decoder its probably not in the supported decoders list yet.

I have Ultimate. It seems that DXVA1 just won't do anything on this machine or on XP with this particular board..at least for me. I haven't seen a DXVA2 supported codec for MPEG2 except for maybe cyberlink (which I can't get to work due to the aforementioned registry issues) so that I could at least use that in Vista.

I'm pleased to hear you got H.264 HA working.

WRT to Vista, I believe HA is only available on DXVA2. The old DXVA1 decoders will not HA under Vista.

Vista Home Premium and Ultimate include the Microsoft MPEG2 decoder which has DXVA2 HA. The ATI decoder and Cyberlink PowerDVD7.3 and higher also support MPEG2 DXVA2 HA.

Its good to hear that I'm not hearing things Smile
From what I have read dxva 2's framework allows for dxva 1 decoders though emulations but I be tit doesn't work so well.
Also in addition to the cyberlink and microsoft dxva 2 decoders arcsoft and bitcontrol have dxva 2 decoders but I haven't got either of them to work on my vista box.
I'm going to try a vista home premium install to see if I can dxva acceleration to work, although its possible that the reason it wont work on my vista business machine is because it messed up.

By the way, I had ZERO success getting my other machine which runs XP to do anything. HA showed up for while under ATI for MPEG2, but then went away. H.264 wouldn't even do it. This is with 8.5. I even tried MPCdecoder and still nothing..

Man that really sucks, I have heard some people suggest that ati, nvidia, miscorsoft have given up on xp as far as dxva is concerned. Some even suggest that the stuttering that occurs with hd mpeg content when using vmr9 is a bug with directx that microsoft doesn't want to or cant fix and they have just redirected there effort into vista and evr. In the future when I have money I'm going to go to an all client server setup using the new intel itx boards with the new x4500 graphics with vista and a good core2duo to give me software decoding if needed. Given pbs's good experince with his gma 950 system playing back hd mpeg2 using ever and the reports of people having good luck using gma 965 systems for mpeg2 and h264 I think I'm going to toss my hat over into intels ring. Plus since the systems are itx they make for supper small clients in the living room and the wife loves that Smile

I had the same feeling over more attention going to EVR and DXVA2. I'll of course keep trying, but I have switched to CoreAVC for software H.264 on the XP based client because I give up for now.
