You asked about
Quote:Is there any way to execute some commands BEFORE a recording commences?

I mentioned the channel changer because gbpvr has the ability to call an external program before it start recording - normally to change channels with a IR blaster. So this may be a way to run something before the recording starts. There is no useful information passed though, other than the channel number to change to. I have no idea what is available via the API's.

Ah, I see. This could do it for me, even with just the channel number. Is this something that is run only when an external recorder is activated? Otherwise, how do I activate an external program before the internal recorder is activated?

If you look at config it is on the source menu - pick 'external exe file' and there you go.
AFAIK it is independent of what the real tuner is looking at - there is no concept of 'internal' or 'external'

The only problem would be if you needed to control an external STB with this.

No need for that. I see what you mean about the .exe plugin. Clever. Do you know if the start of the recording will "wait" until the called process terminates?

Something else that would be useful is a defineable process that occurs before the PLAYBACK of a video file. This would help me to set the resolution to suit the file about to be played.

That is a batch file called by the tray app any time it notices the recording status has changed (recording or not recording). When a recording starts, this is called soon after.
