I don't really think I can put it any nicer. I have recently started checking them out because I will probably end up using XBMC as a client for GBPVR. The server will record, and upstairs I'll use XBMC. I mainly interested in all the CBS, NBC, YouTube type plugins and the eye candy (the wife got a look at the eye candy and doesn't want to go back).

Anyhow, I figured it being such a huge member board I would get some decent interaction going.. WRONG

They pretty much ignored any question I had - at least I didn't get berrated and yelled at. In reading through all the old and current posts, they are a bit Nazi and really go to town on the "N00bz." Not cool really. Plus Windows seems to be the red headed stepchild.

Anyhow, just wondering if anyone has noticed this that has dabbled over there.

"There's no place like forums.gbpvr.com!" I mean that, you guys are probably the best forum of any kind.

I had the same idea. They are not to friendly over there. It'd be cool if we could discuss here how to integrate the two.

I had brought the idea up of integrating an gbpvr front end in xbmc before (same as they do for mythtv). I know they had some people looking at it, but I think interest in developing it died out.
I myself went trudging through their code to see if I could take a stab at it, but apparently my c++ days are long behind me and I got confused quickly.

I have been a member of their boards almost as long as I have been one here.
When I have a question about gbpvr I have no hesitation in asking (after searching as well) and have never been berated for it.
I cannot say the same on their boards...

They do make an excellent product I just wish their forums didn't give off the impression that they don't care if anyone is actually using it.

Yes, that's exactly what I experienced. I would really like a it as a front end to GB-PVR. I sort of use it like that now, except the TV show info doesn't import into it but I can navigate to the shared folder and watch a show through it though.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I use gbpvr for recording tv and watching it back.
I switch to xbmc for movies and downloaded tv content (not recorded).
I'm hoping with the introduction of the slick skin there will be more people writing great plugins and skins for gbpvr that have the same type of feel as xbmc does (I don't mean work the same as xbmc, but just with a professional look and feel to them).
It would also be great if the scraper functionality could be brought into gbpvr as well. I read a post somewhere that xbmc's scraper functionality would be wrapped in it's own project to be utilized by other programs. If that's the case maybe we can see it brought into gbpvr as well...

EDIT: Actually, apparently there has been a ScraperXML library built using xmbc's scraper library. The author has said he will post a .net dll for using (he has released it under gpl) so this sounds very promising for getting some nice scraper support into GBPVR.

I just curious how your playback of HD recording has been with XMBC

I recently downloaded it just too see what it was like, but playback was not great. Is there a way to adjust codecs for playback. I really like the interface but still think GBPVR is great too, just want to play around with XMBC and perhaps Boxee at some point

XBMC for linux will use nvidia cards for acceleration which helps a lot.
I use the windows version and with a C2Duo 3.0Ghz processor I have no problems at all.
Unfortunately there is no Hardware acceleration in the windows version though. XBMC uses FFMPEG to play all of it's video so you can't really apply other codecs to it.
There is an external player type plugin which will allow you to use another player to play the video but I personally have never used it.

I will have to look into it, FFmpeg doesnt work well on my client for playback, but it would be interesting to see if i can get it to work

Playback is acceptable. On recorded 720p or 1080i MPEG2 shows from the US, I get some interlacing issues. I believe there is a setting to correct that but I haven't bothered. Comskip doesn't work all that great with it either. Sometimes it skips it fine and others it ignores it.

On my laptop, I get tearing, but I think messing with vertical sync will get rid of that. And as was said, you'll need a dual core CPU because there's not much acceleration available except for some NVIDIA cards. My laptop has a single core AMD and it plays 720p ok, but won't work with 1080p. If I fire up MPC HC, that has DXVA and that will play 1080p and 720p (properly encoded) on hardware (CPU at around 10-15%)
