The instructions that came with my MVP said you should set the PC IP to 192.123.1.1 when using a cross-over cable. I though this was a bit weird, but it works just fine. The only thing is I have to start the Hauppauge MVP services to cold-boot the MVP (because – as I understand - they implement a DHCP server), but this is almost never needed because hardly ever looses power.

I have a wireless (DHCP) WAN/LAN connection and a crossover cable (static IP) connected to my MVP and everything works fine. I'm not sure if there is required static IP, but I did have to make it in a different network subnet as to not cause routing issues. So I have the following:

Wireless -> 10.10.10.255 Network
Wired crossover -> 192.168.1.1

Additionally, I removed any default routes that refered to the crossover network (netstat -rn and route delete).

Both Hauppauge SW and GB-PVR work fine. You do need to setup the software configurations for your frontend.

I use it like that it works better for me and i use a really long cable only time its a problem is when theres a power failure so then i have to boot mvp first time using hauppauge software and then gbpvr from there on out. heres a little more on making that work if you have hauppauge software installed

you might also wanna try some of these nice tweaks
