I have my files trans-coded to wmv-700kb/s after they are done recording and then sent to a server. I have my students view these files using the mms protocol (mms://hcc-media.hawkeyecollege.edu/psych/11-02.wmv)

Before I switched to gbpvr I was able to ff/rew skip around when I recorded with the generic ATI ehome software, but the scheduling was horrible! The research I have done shows either something called index frames that needed to be added to the file when it trans-codes, or there may be a total duration file length issue.

if you try my older classes, they work fine…
(mms://hcc-media.hawkeyecollege.edu/psych/10-02.wmv)

the ffmpeg documentation doesn’t have anything about index frames, that i can understand (http://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-doc.html)

should i use windows media encoder to trans-code after my recordings with postprocessing.bat?

I interpret this as being in violation of the EULA.

Well good thing I switched back to the ATI software! My home desktop has the same exact setup, and when I connect to my home media server I also have the same issue. I have Family Guy recorded every night and sent to my media server. When I am away, I access my server with the same mms protocol. I also tried my Xbox, and it will play it fine but I, again, cannot skip around; I can't even pause!

Is there any way to reduce the bit rate even more than the wmv-700kb/s setting? My home upload speed it not that fast and tends to buffer too much!

Thanks for the help

I think you are making your life too difficult using mms. While there are many ways you could try and set up a mini personal IPTV channel, using protocols liek rtp, rtsp, or mms, you end up configuring servers and files. Most GBPVR remote users seem quite happy with the ease of use of EWA with a standard http web service.

An alternate for browsing your personal files remotely might be orb.
