Recently I noticed that the picture on my hd tv, when hooked up through hdmi, dims when I turn on subtitles by pressing the yellow button on the remote. The same happens when I press the blue button to display the bar that shows the recording length. Turning off the subtitles brightens the picture back to normal. The same happens when the recording length bar disappears. These symptoms do not occur if I'm hooked up through component cables, only when output through hdmi cable.

BTW, the native PCH player does not display these same symptoms, maintaining a sharp and bright picture through hdmi.

Is there anything I can do to avoid the picture degradation and retain the subtitles?

I've see the same thing with the OSD (but don't use subtitles, so just ignore it)
I see a pattern of vertical lines (like shadow pinstripes) on the display, almost like the OSD is a mildly opaque mask on top of the video.

It's not dimming, it is displaying the alpha value that GBPVR sends. In component mode I never figured out how to set this. There might be a config.xml value that adjusts this, there was at one point.

Personally if I was using subtitles I think the native player in NMT mode be better. The exception might be North American closed-captionned files, into an SD monitor, there are decoded with a hardware player.

Good point, and that is what I've started doing now that I know there is no easy fix. The NMT player allows one to adjust many of the subtitle parameters, most importantly the sync with the audio. Subtitles can be very distracting when they are displaying dialogue a few seconds removed from the audio, faster or slower.

Another symptom of my hdmi input viewing is that GBPVR won't show a picture (sound is fine) when playing a show if the GBPVR interface has been sitting idle for an hour or so. It might have to do with the server sleeping, I don't know, but again it only happens with the HDMI connection. So I have to restart GBPVR every night before viewing anyway, so I might as well watch a subtitled show first.

If you turn off the HDMI monitor leaving the GBPVR interface up you will experience problems. It is generally best to exit to the NMT software rather than letting mvpmcx2 run when you disconnect HDMI.
