It should xp home doesn't have the drivers but you can load them if missing
Xp pro and xp mce came loaded with driver Or you could use Hip drivers and load Hip I find this the best because you can make hip do many more things

If it's missing the drivers, I believe you'll just need to install this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912024
It says "Media Center" but installed on XP when I ran it a couple of years ago. Back then it was simply "eHome Rollup", looks like there has been an update. The original update seems to still be available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888795

Thanks for the help. I tried to install KB912024 but it said there was no need to install as I already had a later version installed. The Hip driver looks a good backup and possible the best solution.

I bought the a device called "Vista MCE Remote Control" and can confirm that it works immediatly out of the box without having to install any software on XP Professional. All the basic functions seem to work.

Just FYI
XP professional has the ehome drives for an MCE remote control already built into it, XP home does not, but i have once seen ({and used the instruction) on sage tV forum that detailed how to pull the drivers out of the mce rollup update to install on XP home, i have done this and used the drivers on my XP home install to get the mce remote working and it works just like on XP professional
