Perhaps the people were confused by recordings they've made that were copy freely. If converting DRM'd files to dvr-ms worked, the files wouldn't exactly be copy protected.

DVR-MS and WTV and just containers. The files are still streamed through the cable network in encrypted mpeg-ts formats.

About this... while it would be a hack, would it be possible when one of these DRM'd recordings is selected for playback that NPVR invoke WMC to play it, and after it's done, minimize it again, or at least allow the user to exit WMC and return to NPVR themselves? I know double-clicking on a WMC video in Windows Explorer opens WMC and it immediately starts playing, so it seems at least playback ought to be possible via a PC anyway.

Wouldn't this still be an issue if you're using a server/client set up if the server isn't used as HTPC and the clients, I guess it could be done via a RDP 7MC session from the server to clients.

FYI my WTV files actually contain mpeg2 and from what I understand is because that's what my provider sends in the stream, if they sent mpeg4 then that's what it would be.

That's why they are called "containers".
