So, yesterday I ordered, from Amazon, an Antec 30123 VERIS E-Z Multimedia Station which is a cheapie remote with external IR receiver. It was only $8.. I only bought it for the receiver.

So, here's what I'd like to try.. We have a ton of old remotes lying around -- many from old TiVO boxes that have been decommissioned and we also have a pair of fully functioning SageTV remotes that came with their extenders (HD300's).. I was thinking we could use any of these to control NPVR (or XBMC should the interest arise) by fiddling around in the IR config file for Windows7.. We're not looking for anything super fancy -- just the basics -- power on/off (aka sleep), play, record, stop, volume control, channel control and the like..

So, with that in mind, do you think I'm doomed to failure or is this just a matter of fiddling with the config file for the remote once we get it in my hands or perhaps using EventGhost if needed? Thanks!

I use IRSS (http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/forums...-irss.165/) on my Windows 7 & Windows 8 clients. I'm not sure how well it integrates with NPVR but it is seamless with XBMC. You can program almost any remote/transceiver with it, and the feature I like the most is you can record macros (for turning off/on all your equipment). Of course you will need blasters for each component (TV, receiver, etc...)

Cool. Thanks for the tip.. I figured if I've got spare remotes sitting around and I can find a usable IR receiver then I should be in business and generate less e-waste too!

Ok.. Got my Antec remote + Receiver.. The remote is super tiny and has only are bare minimum of features -- not planning on using it really. So, I downloaded IRSS and installed it.. However, it did not really 'see' my IR button presses using one of my SageTV remotes (or any others I tried) for some reason even though the sensor was receiving them (it's got a light on the side indicating reception).. So, I know the hardware is working fine but the software...?

Since the receiver is an iMon device I told IRSS that was my receiver by clicking the checkbox near that drivers name.. pressed the configure button and it looked OK.. Anyway, fired up the Translator tool in the tray and it said it was 'connecting..' and never changed the message -- what is it connecting to?? Perhaps that is part of my issue as it never said "connected" -- just "connecting.." or something like that.

Anyway, I was still able to bring that up and hit "new" on the bottom left but it refused to see any button pushes..

I then tried EventGhost -- but I couldn't figure out what the heck I was supposed to do with it after playing with it for about 10 minutes and uninstalled it.

So, I also know that NPVR was able to see my SageTV remote because when I hit one of the arrow buttons on it the mouse would move in a diagonal manner.. So I know Windows is seeing it OK in the device Manager and it's even marked as being able to wake the system (unlike the keyboard HID device)..

Any suggestions on how to proceed with learning a remote whether it be a SageTV remote, old DirecTivo remote (got several of them) or something else? I'm a bit stumped here as this is my FIRST time dealing with IR on a PC of any sort.. My wife isn't happy currently about requiring a mouse to change channels (besides having to get to visit the server where NPVR runs).. Big Grin

I find HIP very easy to set up and use, you might want to give it a try. http://www.byremote.com.au/HIP/default.htm
