I have just set up a Mag 250 IPTV stb / HDPVR2 GE Plus / Hauppauge WinTV / NPVR / WebGrab ++ EPG setup. I am now waiting for a Hauppauge blaster and remote to complete the setup (New option for the new GE Plus model as advised by Hauppauge). This is only for watching and recording TV channels.

I am currently in Cyprus and do not have OTA or cable or satellite (Not in English, anyway). Hence the Mag.

The Mag connects to a provider that sends over 300 channels – all SKY and all Freeview plus some US channels. It has HDMI output and a USB port that can be connected directly to an external HDD for recording live. But, this is what NPVR does and the Mag doesn’t give an on screen EPG for scheduling future recordings which is where I want to be.

All works OK - so far (1st day) - All the UK channels are available in the schedule and clicking on one starts and stops the recording as it should. Pic quality is fine.

However – and obviously – regardless of which EPG channel I click, it only records the channel that the Mag is sending because they all have to be mapped to the same input and NPVR sees only 1 channel.. This is not unexpected. Then, obviously, when a recording starts, it disconnects the other live channel that is being watched.

First option / solution is a second Mag box – and a third ... etc. but that requires a new sub each time ... will get expensive.

But - I see in the Wiki that digital signals can be handled so that NPVR can see all channels such that each channel can be mapped individually.

Does anyone have any experience with the Mag and maybe a suggestion as to how – if possible – I can see all 300 channels in the same way that digi signals can be seen. Maybe additional kit of some kind ??

Would really appreciate some lateral thinking ...

Thanks guys ...

The hardware setup you describe is only capable of delivering a single channel at a time. Sorry, but there is no magic NextPVR can provide to avoid this reality. If you wanted different channels simultaneously, then you'd need multiple of this setup.

Sub,

Just a thought - but - what effect by having the Mag box connected directly to the pc by usb. This would avoid the single channel select by the HDPVR and put the tuner against NPVR. Would the full channel list be seen then ??

I have no idea what Mag box is, and what connecting it the PC via USB would do.

I would have expected any USB port on the device would be intended for a thumb drive, for playing media files on the box, or maybe recording.

Hi sub,

OK, will experiment.

The Mag 250 IPTV box has 2 usb ports which are initially for downloading / uploading from / to an HDD or for a WiFi adapter. http://uktvcyprus.co.uk/setup.html

Thanks anyway ..

Hi, Kamares. Can you tell me how you set up the cable connections? Since the Mag250 box does not have Component connections did you use the AV converted to S video?

Thanks

Hi Armou1,

I connected the mag 250 HDMI output to an HDMI splitter - (which also strips out the HDCP copy protection) and then from the splitter to both a tv and a Hauppauge PVR 2 GE Plus. This allows full HD to pass through to both and allows HD tv recording via the HD PVR. No need to use the component method - even if you could ..

You can google for HDCP strippers but the one I used is a 2 port output:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Switch-Splitter-...i+splitter

Or, if you need 4 outputs then:
http://www.amazon.com/BG-550-portable-Po...B0089DVCT8

They both work.

K, in fact, I've been able to make the PVR work with just HDMI in and out. The HDMI pass through seems to work fine and, having loaded the upgrade to WinTV8, so does the PVR. Maybe slightly iffy video quality on playback but otherwise OK.

A,

OK, good ..

I had a lag with pass through to tv so used the splitter and straight to tv. No lag.
I think ?? better playback as well although the HDPVR won't do 1080/60 hz only 30.

Sorted then ..
